I like this. Not entirely sure about the phrase "with their life" what about for life or for dear life? Just suggesting ...

was going for a more volunteer "with their life", thought about "dear life" but it made it seem more holding on for fear, rather than holding on because of wanting to.. guess this didn't come across too well... also it's both of them depending on each other, rather than one just not wanting to fall... does any of this make sense ???
