December Dreams

December Dreams

A Poem by redzone

DECEMBER DREAMS
December dreams spiral
thru the whiffs of smoke,
emanating from forest hidden Cherokee homes.
They pirouette the way notes
imagine Lester Young’s
tenor music to be;
the way Blue Jays flap
while protecting their territory.
~~~
The Eastern mountains,
snow covered and brown,
rise gently as I walk
yet provide glimmers of ancient valleys
carved out by receding ice.
There is the feel of human destiny
washing me as a breeze
sings thru wild peach tree
branches. A breeze lifting sharp talon hawks
with its hunting melodies
and carrying the owls secrets
thru even more exotic landscapes.
~~~
Over looking the Talamaque River,
I rest on the brown
frozen earth becoming
lost in ancestor dreams.
I can see the blood flowing west.
I feel the tears soaking the ground
where Dogwood now grows.
But Grandfather speaks to me
with a warm sun in the ‘long ago tongue’:
“Redzone, it is good to
have these memories.
To remember the trees
the bear and the chic-a-dee.
One day, May will arrive with the morning crows
and the Turtle will once again discuss
constellations with the Moon.
Our people, will no longer be forgetful
of who we are and how far we have come."
~~~
December dreams spiral
thru whiffs of smoke
and Lester Young plays
with the flapping Blue Jays.
(written after finishing a collection of poems
by Ron Welburn called “Coming Through Smoke
and the Dreaming”)
This is very beautifully written! I love the way you compose these visual scenarios packed with natural entities as symbols of the various totems in all wild things. I'm reminded of feelings I had when I would go hiking alone, so often, all my life (when I could). It always felt to me like the natural world was alive with so many symbiotic relationships, I longed to meld into the party going on out there. In your writing, I feel as if I CAN meld into the natural party that is wildlife & wilderness. It's interesting to see a different type of outdoor scene than the one I'm familiar with around here. You've transported me . . . (((HUGS)))
Wow this was really wonderful to read! You can't read this without seeing the river, the valleys and the trees. It reminds me so much of James Fenimore Cooper's novels. The imagery in this is topnotch sir. Awesome work!
This is beyond charming, the imagery is splendid curt. I felt the fire emanating from those Cherokee homes.
I rest on the brown
frozen earth becoming
lost in ancestor dreams.
I can see the blood flowing west.
I feel the tears soaking the ground
where Dogwood now grows.
So luverly, it could certainly stand alone. Seeing the world through your eyes is always a treat my friend. Awe inspiring read.
My friend, this was a wonderful and beautiful journey this morning. For a few moments I was somewhere else. Not sitting in this paperwork filled office but wandering through the beauty of nature, one on one with life, alone, dreaming, feeling the breeze and hearing the birds play. This was magnificent my friend. I enjoyed every line of this poem.
Really interesting poem. I like the way you detail scenes and images a lot. Great stuff.
Beautiful poem Curt....I could imagine the scenes as I read. The snow is falling here and this sure fits the mood. I see you were inspired by another poet. I will look up that collection myself. By the way if youve never read Ron Rash's poetry you might want to. He also has novels and a collection of storys.
