A Chapter by Rebel_angel

Scarlet knew who he was before she even looked. His voice never changed, strong yet strangely gentle. And he was the only person who ever called her by her full name, her was the only person allowed. Scarlet tilted her head to where the voice came from. And there he was, stood on a branch in the tree towering above her. Even at night Scarlet could see his beauty. His sandy blonde hair cut perfectly to shape his strong and sweet face. “Quite the opposite actually.” She laughed and so did he, his laugh travelling through the woods, gentle and sweet. He jumped from the branch about 12feet from the ground. Like a cat he landed on his feet. “Hello stranger.” He said as he straightened up. Scarlet flung her arms around his neck and held him in a tight embrace. He returned it by tightening his arms around her waist and kissing the top of her head. He was not the much taller than scarlet but he was tall enough to rest his chin on the top of her head. “Dam it I have miss you, Red.” Scarlet giggled at his nickname for her. “Scarlet is too long to say.” That’s what he used to say, he said Red was short and meant the same, love, passion, hate and blood. “Perfect for you.” He’d say. Scarlet squeezed him tighter. “I have missed you too James.” And this was true. Scarlet had missed James every day he was not by her side. She loved him her was like a brother to her. There was a bound between them that was stronger than anything else in the world. And that bond bound them together in friendship no matter where they are in the, together or apart. She loosened out of his grip to get a better look at him. Nothing had physically changed at all. The only change was in his wonderful dark brown eyes. Somehow they had become wiser, older. “So this is where you are living now, is there no house around here?” Scarlet chuckled at his whit. “There is but I wanted to kill and well I just couldn’t wait.”

“Well I saw you enjoyed it.” He laughed and gently pushed her by the arm. “Do you feel better know?”  Scarlet knew he knew she did. He could see it in her eye’s how alive they must have been. Scarlet, for the first moment since the kill, looked at the body on the floor. She could feel the new blood coursing through her veins making her feel so alive. She could see the terrified final look on his face as he died and that made a whole new kid of pleasure surge through her veins. She felt powerful and triumphant of one more kill, one less human in the world. Sand she knew only James could understand the feel she had now. Any other vampire would have not been affected in any way; they were just food to them. But to James and Scarlet this was war and they were going to win. And every kill brought them one step closer. Scarlet turned to James and smiled, “Come on, we can go back to mine.” James smiled back. His smile was inviting and kind. Scarlet guessed that’s why he always caught so many humans. They walked back to the cottage in silence. And that’s what scarlet loved about James he knew when to leave her, to feel all the amazing and brilliant light that was coursing through her body. And she did. Everything looked even brighter now like there was hope in the moon, hope that someday her and James will win. It was like the stars were happy that she had got a small amount of vengeance. It was like all her surrounding welcomed the killer inside of her, and for once she didn’t have to hide it. By the time scarlet made it to the cottage door, she had almost returned to normal. James followed her into the cottage. It was small and cosy with barely anything inside. In the small room through a door was a sofa, the empty kitchen to the left and to the right Scarlet’s bedroom. But for some reason she loved buildings like this, it reminded her of the older times when the bricks weren’t all the same size and shape, were all the cobble stones were wobbly. Just like this little cottage.  James smiled as he entered the room where the sofa sat alone. “Just like home.” He said.

“I’m just going to wash my teeth; I can still taste the saliva from that piece of vermin.” Scarlet said whilst reaching for the handle to the small bathroom next to the living room. James through his head back and laughed. “Yeah I saw the kiss.” He continued by making kissing sounds. Scarlet reached for the paper book on the floor and through it at him. “Shut up looser, you have kissed them to.” The book caught his face. “Touchy Red?” Scarlet didn’t answer she just slammed the door to the bathroom behind her.

The bathroom was small and simplistic. The walls were painted white, and in the far corner was a small bath tub connected to a shower and in the other corner a toilet. Scarlet flicked on the light and headed straight on the sink, next to the bath. She grabbed the mouthwash removed the id and took two large sips before gruelling and spitting. When she looked up she caught her reflection in the mirror in front of her. And for a moment she just stared. She watched as her eyes changed colour in front of her. They faded from scarlet and black to emerald green and finally they returned to their natural dark green. Stood in front of the mirror with James outside the door made Scarlet remember the pack they made to each other and the vow Scarlet made to herself. In her mind she could hear the two of them in her mind making the promise. Making the blood tie. And for a moment it was as if she was there once again, looking straight into his eyes. Her heart pounding as they hid in the dark alley.

Scarlet watched James as her took the knife to his wrist. In one swift moment he pierced his flesh. He held out the knife to Scarlet. “Quite before it heals.” Scarlet took the knife from his hand and slid the blade across her wrist. Nothing happened. “You have to use a lot of strength it’s like trying to break steel.” James informed her. Again scarlet slid the blade across her wrist, this time using as much force as possible. And it worked, a small tingling sensation filled her arm and a tiny trickle of think dark red blood seeped from a small wound. “Ok, now let the blood run into the cup.” James instructed and produced a ancient metal cup, engraved with writing that Scarlet had never seen before. And along the bottom there was a line of small ruby and sapphire jewels. Scarlet lifted her wrist and let the blood trickle into the cup until the wound had healed. And James did the same. He then gently swirled the cup mixing the blood. “How do you know how to do this?” Scarlet asked memorised.

“I’ve been around longer than you and I have seen it done before.” James replied simply. “Now let us get this done fast before they find us. Place your hand over the cup and repeat after me, just edit in your own name.” He paused for a second and looked at Scarlet. “Are you sure you want to do this, you are still young.” Suddenly angry busted for within scarlet and her eyes blazed black. “They must pay!” She spat the words with venom. James nodded and his dark brown eye’s blazed orange with pure hatred. He held out the sacred cup and began. “I James Lovett the third, vow to protect and cherish Lillian Scarlet Cole. I invite her into my family.” He paused and nodded to Scarlet. “I Lillian Scarlet Cole vow to protect and cherish James Lovett the third. I invite him into my family.”

“Let us share the same blood and be bound to help and protect on another. Let us vow to make at least one human suffer pain every day we walk the earth. Let us give vengeance to the vampires we have lost. Let us be family through blood tie.” James stopped and placed the cup to his lips. He took to sips and gave it to Scarlet and nodded for her to do the same. She placed the sweet smelling blood to her lips and drank. All the sudden life burst through her body. She felt his blood bursting though her body. And at that moment she knew she was bound to him, they shared the same blood and that was a bound that could not be broken. He was a best friend, a companion, a brother to her from that moment on.

A sharp knock at the door forced Scarlet out of her memory. The door swung open and James lent against the door frame watching her. “Don’t you wait for an answer?”

“You have nothing to hide from me red.” He answered very proud. “So how have things been going with you and the land of living? Last time I saw you, you where of the Paris, what the hell brought you here?”

“The lead in Pairs turned out to be false, and well I don’t know what brought me here. I thought I would visit home and well came across this place. I guess it reminded me of hat home used to be like. So I thought I would stay here until you found the neck lead.”

“Oh I see, you leave the man to do all the work.”

“It’s the way it used to be.”

“Ah, but we live in the twentieth century now.” He laughed. Scarlet moved to the door, James stepped aside and held out his left arm. “Ladies first Miss Cole.” Scarlet laughed and walked into the living room and switched on the light. “Well you shall be happy to know that I have found another lead.  Fjador DuBois, his name means from God and DuBois means Wood. He comes from a long line of vampire and which hunters.” There was a short pause and James took in a deep breath, when he spoke again his voice was week with anger. “Scarlet, he links back to the first killing.” Scarlet’s eyes widened and flashed pure black coal. She swallowed hard and blinded, James waited for her eyes to return to their normal colour before he continued. “He is the last blood relative of the hunters in the first kill. He is the one we keep missing.” Scarlet was on her feet in one graceful swift movement. She had forgotten about hiding her elegance to fit in with the human world. And for the first time in months moved like a vampire. Each movement she made was as elegant as the dance of a ballerina, each movement she made was too fast for any human eye to catch. She flew through the house like an angel, but her eyes showed something else. They were the colour of coal with sharp hints of scarlet. Eyes that only held hatred, eyes that could kill with one look. James watched as she moved about the cottage gathering a small bag and filling it with the only possessions she really had. An old and tattered rag doll ripped, rotten and barely recognisable, a small wallet that held a small amount of cash and a change of clothing. Scarlet blew through the living room where James was stood. He held out his arm to stop her in mid walk. “Red calm down, there is no way you will make it to France without being detected if you carry on like this.” Scarlet looked James directly in the eye, “How can you be so calm, when that piece of disgusting vermin is still out there alive.” The words felt like acid in her mouth. The thought of him living make her physically want to vomit and that was impossible for a Vampire. James just looked at her and then answered in a gentle voice “Because I have had time to think about it and I want to make him wait, then I can hurt him more.” It was such a contrast to his voice it took scarlet by surprise. Her eyes shrank back to their normal colour and she melted into James’s arms. She closed her eyes and breathed out a long breath, “It’s just…” James cut her off in the same gentle tone, “I know.” He gently kissed the top of her head like a father comforting his little girl. “Your right,” She whispered. “The longer her waits the better the kill will be.” He laughed “I always am.” Scarlet nudged him in the stomach. “Besides,” He continued “I haven’t had chance for a single kill today.” Scarlet smiled and looked up to meet his gaze; his eyes were full of mischief. “Well we will have to fix that.” They slowly unlocked from each other, Scarlet took a step back, and James smiled a big playful smile. “That is exactly what I thought.”

“Ok. Just let me get changed.” Scarlet flew into her room and closed the door. She rummaged through the trunk in the corner of the room. It was one of the only things in the room that and a long mirror standing next to it. She found an emerald green silk shirt that buttoned up to just above her bust and make her green eyes shine. She also managed to find a pair of black fitted trousers. Scarlet stood up and ripped off the clothes she had on already. Once dressed she flew back out to the living room. James was slouched in the sofa, waiting patiently. “Make yourself at home why don’t you.” She laughed and so did James. “Right lets go have some fun.” He winked at scarlet and stood to his feet in one elegant movement. But it was then the two heard the noise of footsteps on the path up to the cottage. Scarlet and James exchanged a look then James raised his eyebrow. “Delivery service?” Then there was a faint tap at the door. Who the hell is that? Scarlet thought. It was too late for the humans and what other vampire would come to her? She glanced at James who was already half way to the door. Scarlet listened intently. “You!” It was barley a whisper but scarlet herd it like someone screamed in her ear. James was angry she felt the air change like it tensed around her. His voice was tight, she moved towards the door but before she could make her first step James was in front of her. “You have a visitor.” His voice was short and clip. James took one step to the left and Scarlet saw exactly who was stood in front of her. His bleach blonde hair cut short and perfectly place on his head. Skinny, no not just skinny he was a twig lost in a blue jumper and blue jeans that looked three sizes too big. He had large searching ocean blue eyes. He wore a solemn serious expression. Scarlet knew him from one look. Her twin brother stood stiff in front of her.
