Love Letters From GeorgiaA Poem by Rebecca L. SmithLyrics from the perspective of a soldier in the Vietnam War. Audio now available.
I sailed off for Vietnam
Left her standing on the shore I waved goodbye in the sunset Till I couldn’t see her anymore And she sent me love letters Sprayed with peach perfume “Baby, since you can’t be in Georgia, “I’m sending Georgia to you… to you… to you.” Every night that I missed her I stared at pictures of her face But how could a Polaroid Ever take her place? So, I lived through our letters Sending me pieces of home I told her things would get better I didn’t know I was wrong I was wrong, I was wrong, so wrong Bullets flying way too low Turning young girls into widows But I didn’t know… No, I didn’t know… Bombs lighting up the sky Good ole boys sent here to die But I didn’t know… No, I didn’t know… I was already gone, already gone I was already gone, already gone I’m gone [Short Instrumental Break] But I’ll live on through our love letters Take my words and keep them strong And when you read our love letters Maybe it won’t feel like I’m gone… I’m gone I’m already gone, already gone, already gone, I’m gone… I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry I’m gone... © 2014 Rebecca L.
