The City

The City

A Poem by readingblock

Pay no mind to the children’s squeals, they grapple with their own afflictions. Heed the broken third step, else plunge to your demise. Listen for the happy banter of husband and wife. Their anger can swallow you whole. Do not step on any creature, their relatives may take revenge. Enter the room. Ignore the rusted pipes, the yellowing walls with their chipped paint, the apparent dirt, permanently staining the floor. Money, dirty clothes, and empty beer cans nestle on the couch. Needle marks create a stippled image along a man’s arms. He is dead. The last moments of his life riddled with regret. A broken neck, crushed windpipe, body hanging from the ceiling, leaving behind a grateful son. No tears are shed. No one notices. People go to work, to school, they enjoy their lives. The city lives on. The corruption can never cease. Distinguished escorts tempt men with their mystic siren calls. Darling swindlers, charmingly mischievous, destroy without a care. Unhappiness seeps through their smiling faces, held fast by their deceitful pleasure. Young ones, dreamers, the hopeful ones, once glowed and gleamed, now dulled and rusted. Hurt, sold, deceived, broken-trust is a double edged blade. The stolen innocent become the nefarious thieves. Time and time again, attempting to bandage their hurt, steal what was stolen, find truth in deceit, and piece together what was broken. The pieces never quite fit the same. The boy is fortunate. He has no money, no family, no home. The city is unfortunate, it gave birth to it’s greatest enemy. One by one they fall prey to the boy. In the room his father was killed, blood splatters, again and again. Men came, but never went.

I don't necessarily hate cities, just the corruption that comes along with them. Please give honest feedback on what this piece did well and what it didn't.
