Stolen

Stolen

A Chapter by Richard B. Berry

So naïve and so shy
Hidden mysteries of life
Did not become part of the “team”
So they stole his dreams
Kicked him to the curb
Where he sat burning herb
Flipping burgers and out of school
Not following society’s rules
Switching jobs, can’t find a career
What happened to the believer?
Just wanted to be understood
If only he could
With an IQ off the scale
And a destiny to fail
Life is meaningless without faith
Closed heart leading to hate
Frustration becomes rage
Contemplating the next stage
Sitting in an empty room
Plotting some sort of move
To give his life some sort of meaning
One hot balmy evening
Starting to hear voices
Offering morbid choices
Could no longer take the emptiness
Going beyond depressed
Where the voices become real
He can no longer feel
Becoming detached from humanity
To an alternate reality
Emperor of a delusion
Now exacting retribution
Perceived enemies of the state
Now laid waste
Burning shells of flesh
Yet still he’s obsessed
Revenge is never enough
When it is measured in blood
An unheard cry for help
From the depths of hell
For something to make sense
Deliverance
To a life worth living
Something worth believing
Then he opened his eyes
There was life and the light
