A Poem by Glee

I say I’m in a relationship

They say they wanna see with whom

I say I finally found the one

They wanna meet this special lady

I say its still too soon to bring them out

They say they wanna know the one I love

Too much waiting

Too much hiding

Too much mystery

I go from work knowing I have someone waiting

I go to sleep knowing I have someone by my side

I wake up the next morning knowing they will always be lying right next to me

I step out

Everyone’s staring at me

They’ve been waiting for me

All my friends are there

Men

Women

Family

Comrades

Colleagues

They see my smile is shining

They see my face is gleeful

As if I’ve been in heaven

They wanna  know with who

They want to meet this special lady

They wanna see what she looks like

This special one that brings out the goodness in me

This special one that makes me wanna live again

I say its still too soon

Mustn’t bring them out yet

They say they wanna know the one I love

Too much waiting

Too much hiding

Too much mystery

I wonder though, why they always assume its with a woman

My friends see me and say they sense the touch of a woman on me

My family look at me and say they smell the essence of a woman on me

I wonder why they always assume its with  a woman

I know why

Its because

Everybody always assumes the best

Assumes the usual

Its because everyone always thinks we are the same

Everybody thinks we see the same way

Its because everybody assumes

We’re straight by default

Ordinary by default

Upfront by default

Usual by default

Direct by default

Het by default

But what if we were different!

Ha

Assume the default

Expect the usual

The familiar

The expected

So may be I’ll bring this person out

And let them see what they look like

So may be I’ll introduce them to my family

And let my friends become their friends

This special person that brings out the good in me

Some day

When I’m ready

I’ll bring him out

But not now

Not right now, my love

So may be I’ll bring out a lovely senyorita

Or may be a wonderful red head would do

But how about a pretty blonde

Or may be a smart brunette

And may be I’ll ask her

To pretend

Just pretend to be my girlfriend for this one evening

This one day

This one morning

But not the night

Definitely not the night

For at night I’ll be with him

So may be I’ll offer to pay off her mortgage

Or may be I’ll just settle her loans

Or may be I’ll get her that fancy new car she’s always wanted

Or that beautiful diamond ring

If only she’ll have me this evening

And pretend

Just pretend to be my girlfriend for one day

So may be I’ll dance with her

May be I’ll open her door

May be I’ll even kiss her

But just  for the paparazzi to see

May be I’ll bring her a drink

May be I’ll give her a ride

And may be

Just may be I’ll even kneel down and propose to her

But just so that they could see

For I know she would say no

No surprise there

And when the night is finally over

And the lights are turned out

The party is finished

And the guests return back to their homes

I’ll know

I’ll always know

That I’ll be returning back to him
