Insomnia

Insomnia

A Poem by Glee

Long day?
Now look at you
You’re wasted,

Exhausted,

Depleted,

Sedated

Do you hear it?
The sleep
The sound of sleep
Calling to you
Beckoning to you

When I’m tired, I shall sleep
When I’m bored, I shall sleep
When I’m sad, I shall sleep
When I’m angry, I shall sleep

Oh sweet darling sleep

Slip me away
Sweet sleep
Slap me away
Charming sleep
Sweep me away

Peace and quiet
Calm and dark
I hear my sleep calling
Drifting away
Into the night
I fall into a whirl of my sleep
And don’t bother to wake me
Deeper and deeper I fall
Down into the creek

Of quiet and comfort
Peacefulness and tranquility
I drop in my sleep
Caught up in a whirl wind
I drown in my sleep
Deeper and deeper I go
Sleep me a river
And don’t bother to wake me

We are back
Back to the lost kingdom
In the far far away land
Where the castles run high
The kings rule enormous
And the riches flow wide

Beauty is a touch of the day
Class a spun of the evening
The furnishings are glazed with silver
The walls are marked with glitter
The carpets are covered in petals

The time is now
For the king is calling now
We must all go to the king’s castle
For he is preparing a mighty ball
And everyone in the kingdom must come
All the pretty ladies will be there
All the fancy gentlemen shall be prepared
Dressed and decorated in wonderful garments

And suddenly

Bang Bang Bang
Ring Ring Ring

Go away, we are getting late

Bang Bang Bang
Ring Ring Ring

Stop now, can’t you see its time

Bang Bang Bang
Ring Ring Ring

Alas I awaken
And the ground is filled with litter
The walls are smeared with filler
The air covered with filth
The world is full of terror
That will make you tremor
The earth filled with toiling

But it goes on
Hammering away
Ringing away
Like a nagging at the back of the head

Bang Bang Bang
Ring Ring Ring

Come open
Come open

Takes me a sec
To see what’s in the sack
Breathing for the sake
Shifting for the wreck
What the heck

Its my roommates
2am in the morning
And they’re in mourning

I’m coming
I’m coming

Gasping for breath
Screaming with all the strength I can master
Lifting with all the force I can gather
I fight every temptation to return to my wonderful world

Oh sleep, lost sleep

Alas they return
With every ringing and banging
Humming and singing

Hours and hours
Time goes by
Till they return to their beds
And sleep soundly

I’m left gazing into the quiet darkness
Hoping, waiting, wanting
For shall my sleep ever come, I wonder
Shall I return to that sacred land filled with glitter and silver

My thoughts begin to wander to all sorts of things
The car
The office
The kids
The school
The books
The rent

All sorts of things that once weren’t
Shall my sleep ever come, I wonder

Tossing and turning
Sifting and groaning

My mates begin to snore

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Sssssssssssssss
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Sssssssssssssss

Damn it

Mosquitoes start to sound

Ze ze ze ze

Damn it

Sleep calling sleep
Where is it?

Finally I arise
3am in the morning

Fix me up a cup of tea
Pull me out a cold beer from the freezer

Sitting, waiting
Finally, I’m exhausted again
Returning to my heaven of rest
My warm blanket

Waiting
Watching
Hoping for the return to the kingdom
I can not miss the king’s ball

But alas
Sleep never comes

A light headache sits at the back of my skull
A brilliant light shines at the back of my head
Carrying heavy weights on my shoulders
Bragging that sleep shall never come

Wide eyed
Stone cold
Listening to my clock tick
I watch the hours go by
4am
5am
6am
I can hear the birds singing
I can hear the c**k crowing
I can see the flecks of dawn
Oh no, I missed the ball

Exhausted as ever
Tired like whenever
Finally I black out
Like a pile of scrap
In to a long dreamless sleep
I can not remember

Finally I awaken
Its shining brightly
Traffic is screaming
Crowds are fighting
My roommates are gone

I jerk up in shock
Crush my skull on the bed head
Ouch
And finally I roll off the bed
And slump myself hard on the floor
Thud

Gathering all my strength to lift myself
I glance at my watch
Its 10am
I’m late for work

In a rush

I put on my shoes
Wear my pants
Throw on my tie
And wear my shirt
I’m late
Late for work

Rush to the bathroom

I chew on the toothpaste
Scrub with a toothbrush
Gurgle down with water

Rushing to the kitchen
I fix me up a pot of hot water
Chewing on the coffee
Galloping down the water
Washing down the cream and sugar

Finally I’m done
Out and about from the house

I cruise down the highway
Stuck in traffic
Time is running
I’m late

I reach the office

My boss looks at me funnily
My coworkers stare at me weirdly

What’s wrong?
I ask

Your zipper is down

Oh no
So I zip it up
And get to some work at last

A few minutes later
I’m slumped down on my desk
Slouching over the computer
And my boss is struggling to wake me

Damn insomnia

A wonderfully expressed piece about being in the grips of insomnia and the effect it can have on someone. I've been there, but thankfully it's only situational.

Well done!
