1010. the remnants of you

1010. the remnants of you

A Chapter by Ray Nichols

**A Poem About Loss**

"
In the quiet corners of the room,
where shadows linger,
I find the remnants of you
an echo of laughter
drifting like dust in the sunlight,
the scent of your favorite tea
still curling in the air,
a ghost in every sip.
Your chair sits empty,
an unspoken void,
and I trace the outlines of your absence
with fingertips trembling,
searching for comfort
in the fabric of memory,
the warmth of your words
woven into the wallpaper.
Outside, the world moves on,
children chase dreams,
dandelions sway in the breeze,
yet here, time halts
every tick of the clock
a reminder of what was,
a metronome counting down
to an unending silence.
I gather your whispers,
each syllable a fragile thread,
and weave them into a tapestry
that hangs heavy on my heart,
colorful yet frayed,
a collage of moments
the last goodbye tinged in blue,
the laughter that slipped away
like grains of sand through fingers.
And still, I walk the path we carved,
each step a pilgrimage through grief,
the earth beneath me sighing,
as if to say, “You are not alone.”
I speak your name into the wind,
and though it carries away,
I feel you stir in the breeze,
a soft caress, a fleeting smile.
Loss is a tapestry,
threads interwoven with longing,
each knot a memory,
each stitch a tear,
and as I pull at the frayed edges,
I find the beauty in the unraveling,
the strength in the fragility,
the way love persists,
even in absence.
So here I stand,
a witness to time’s cruel march,
an architect of grief,
building monuments of remembrance
with stones of sorrow,
and as I carve your name
into the fabric of my soul,
I understand
loss is not an end,
but a transformation,
a bridge to the past,
a compass to navigate
the labyrinth of what remains,
where love, in all its forms,
continues to bloom,
even in the shadow of loss.
