Inescapable

Inescapable

A Poem by ...

I used these years as solace
In shuddering moments I lived
I lied until the truth was a myth
A bedtime story I used to mount my dreams
I covered my memories in vague selection
Only those that served my purpose
Were permitted to be recalled
As I used the anger to forget
I used the pain to change my heart
Time flowed effortlessly
No interruption to my self deceit
Until the world decided to shift
And your voice rang loudly
In the emptiness I had created for you
You filled the space slowly
Until I was smothered by your existence
And the pain no longer hurt
The anger was no longer true
Nothing was the same
But I recognised your soul
As if the years had been imagined
Your words eroded the pretend
And I was faced with what I had lost
So simply
I had been wrong
For what you make me feel
Cannot be forgotten or erased
In an instant it is all I have
It is the perpetual design
Of you and I
