Eternal Love

Eternal Love

A Poem by Ranjita Ghosh Dasgupta

Love is born one day,

After years of sleepless nights.

Between two hearts,

Between two souls,

Far away from the Angel's sights.

Love is happy,

Love is gay;

Love keeps growing night and day.

A few years passes by,

Passes by the rivers and the fields,

Through the trees and the tall grasses

And the yellow leaves that lie.

Now Love is young,

And Love is bright.

Love looks beautiful in the twilight.

Love is still happy,

Love is still gay;

Love still keeps growing night and day.

*********

A bright sunny day it was,

Sometime in May.

The two hearts fought each other,

The two souls kept at bay.

Why they fought Love didn't know

Or why they kept at bay?

Why were they so sad?

Or why they wept all day?

Oh! Where is Love gone?

The Love which they bore together,

Which brought them all the happiness,

And made their eyes glitter?

Is it lost in the dark black clouds

Of the Nor'wester monsoon,

Or washed away b y its thunder showers?

Or has it left by its own will

Its bed of roses and path of fragrant flowers?

Has it climbed up the steepest mountain,

Or forayed into the nearby woods?

Or maybe it was scared of the fighting hearts,

And ran away, for good !

Nobody knew where Love was.

Whether she lay on a hard rock,

Or was she resting on the soft moss?

Everyone just hoped and wished and prayed-

“Oh, Lord ! May Love be happy,

May Love be gay;

May love keep growing night and day.”

*******************

The two hearts and the two souls

Were now growing old.

But undeterred they waited for Love,

Under the scorching sun and in the biting cold.

It seemed they had been waiting their entire life;

A grey haired man supporting his half-blinded wife.

Suddenly, there appeared a fair and beautiful lady

All dressed in red, looking no less than a fairy.

“Princess!” cried the Old man

And the blind woman immediately knew.

It was their long lost Love

Back to them, all fresh and new.

Their happiness knew no bounds;

The birds sang their hearts out

And the colourful butterflies did their rounds.

And this time, till eternity,

Love is more happy,

Love is more gay;

Love is growing more

Day and night

And night and day.
