A Poem by Audrey Bowers

how could I ever dream
of you loving me?
I am just a simple, quiet girl
who doesn't have a lot of things.
you say it's different than that,
you say you're not "that shallow"
but how could I believe that
when you won't be here tomorrow?
I sigh and shake my head
this is certainly not what I read
in those books a long time ago
And while I sit and think about it
there's definitely no use to shout about it.
You go and put me back on your shelf
and I sit and watch you choose someone else.
