China Doll

China Doll

A Poem by Rachel E Strauch

my grandmother

had a glass china doll

sitting upon her dresser

i never understood why she kept it

for the paint was chipped

and there were cracks running up and down her face like lightning streaks

it was quite

ugly

now that i am older

i think i understand

at least a little more

for the paint that was chipped

was like my wall

and the cracks

were all my insecurities

i was no different

was i not?

it was quite ugly

ugly

like

me

Ahhh, what a lovely metaphor. This is so sweetly sad, and I love it a lot. It reminds me a little of the Velvateen Rabbit--you cannot be real until you've been loved, and to be loved (and to love in return) means to become old and faded and, in some eyes, quite ugly. But, to the most important eyes, you're just as beautiful, if not more, than you were in the very beginning.

In short, a lovely piece!! Thank you so much for sharing :)

we are all china dolls on the inside...as we age the cracks get larger...and we have to really work hard to keep ourselves together...
and when we judge others..we forget about our own cracks...another really strong metaphorical piece.
