The maxims of ConfuciusA Poem by J. MarcA poem of F. Schiller translated by J.M. RakotolahyThe maxims of Confucius
Threefold is the march of time: The future comes forward uncertain Rapidly is the present drained Calmly the past, eternal remain
With impatience not vested In its progress when it wanders. By no fear, no doubt disturbed In its march when it advances.
No regret, no magical consent Can trouble what is permanent. Should you finish the journey Of life, wise and happy
As a counsellor use reflection Not as a tool of your action. Choose not as friend what is passing Not as opponent what is enduring.
Threefold is the measure of space: Without interruption, restless Strives into distance length Infinitely spreads itself width Endlessly sinks depth.
They give you the following illustration: You must go forward without interruption Never be tired, always have self-possession, You will then see all things to their completion,
Stretch your capacities broadly Shape your world personally In depth things you must comprehend Their essence then to you will materialize.
Only perseverance will lead you to the aim. Only in prosperity you find clarity of mind And in the abyss lies truth. © 2008 J. MarcAuthor's Note
