A collection of quotes about love by F. Schiller, translated by J.M. Rakotolahy

The Schiller translations: 10 quotes from the various essays of Friedrich Schiller on the subject of love.

LOVE

1.        When I hate, I take something from myself, when I love, I become richer of what I love. (Philosophical letters)

2.        To what heights does not the ennobled affect of Love bring the human nature and what divine voices knows it not often to extirpate from common souls! (On the necessity to have limits in the use of beautiful forms).

3.        Only Love is a free sentiment, for it takes its pure source from freedom, from our divine nature.(On grace and dignity).

4.        As long as he feels bluntly, desires bluntly, and acts only because of blunt desires, is he still nothing else than world, if we understand under this name bluntly formless content of time. (On the aesthetical education of the human being Letter #11)

5.        Love is the most beautiful phenomenon in the animated creation, it is the omnipotent magnet in the spiritual world, the source of devotion and of the most sublime virtue. (Philosophical letters)

6.        Love is only the reflection of this unique, original force, a mutual attraction of what is excellent in people based on a momentary exchange of their personality, a distraction of their existence.(Philosophical letters)

7.        Love is the guide through which we ascend to divinity. Without any pretence, without being aware, we are aiming for it. (Philosophical letters)

8.        I do not have any proof left for my hopes when I cease to believe in love. A spirit who is alone is a wandering atom in the immeasurable emptiness of space. (Philosophical letters)

9.        Love is at the same time the most generous and the most selfish thing in Nature: generous for it receives from its object nothing and rather gives it everything as the pure spirit can only give and not receive; selfish for it is always its own self what it seeks and values in its object. (On grace and dignity)

10.        Dignity prevents love from regressing into desire. Grace preserves respect from becoming fear. (On grace and dignity)

I like this one: Love is only the reflection of this unique, original force, a mutual attraction of what is excellent in people based on a momentary exchange of their personality, a distraction of their existence. I find it to be true for me.

Thanks for assembling these. It was a lovely read this morning.

Permit a postscript: I think the font on this is too harsh and detracts from any softness that may be proferred.

Dear Marc,

This is an aberration for me ... I don't like these quotes. The language of it is like a polyglot. And I find they lack originality, luster, and spark in concept and style. Its almost as if its a scientific quantifier of love, rather than an artistic expression. There are far too many unnecessary qualifiers in each quote.

There is only one that I find remotely interesting: "Dignity prevents love from becoming desire. Grace preserves respect from becoming fear".

Forgive my brutal critique ... I don't understand how your gathering someone else's quotations comprise a poem. I'd much rather have read something of you. Lo siento, Sarai
