A National symbolA Poem by raineydayI have been here for many generations Rooted in this spot as a national symbol I see you every day as you pass by me I can pick you from the countless voices You are the now, a modern citizen With cars and buildings, smoke and piss You are a force, a change maker I am nothing but a forgotten memoir As trees shed their leaves and flower blossoms I see you change with each season An infant with baby teeth A child with round face A youth with wiry body An adult with heavy shoulder I have seen you grow And I will see you get old And the world will forget you One in million faces, disappear in the crowd Just like I did all those years ago Burned to the ground and deep in sea Your name will be lost along with your voice But generations after, they will still know me Learn of my birthday and my heritage Calculate and anticipate my life like mathematics Each generation will learn of me But not of who I was My values and beliefs They will walk and run and drive Over my grave and over my morals I am a lost ship with name written in history pages I am a national symbol, a statue of stone I am a dead leaf waiting to be blown © 2015 raineyday |
