Phone Call

Phone Call

A Chapter by Laraine Davis

I struggled with pulling out the stubby burgundy suitcase from my closet. I finally accomplished, and, setting it on my bed, I began to pull out clothes from my dresser. I wasn't quite sure what to pack. How long were we to be gone? A couple of days? Weeks? There was no proper estimate. "I'll pack enough clothes for a week. That should hold off pretty well. And if we're gone longer, than I'll go to a Laundromat." I spoke aloud to myself, satisfied with my adult way of handling the matter.

The phone rang, breaking the silence in my room, and I jumped. I jogged over to my bedside table and snatched my phone up. "Hello?" I answered. "It's Albert." I couldn't help but smile at his calming voice. No matter what danger we were to get into in Mexico, I knew Albert would get us out. "Albert. I've remembered something. From that night." Albert's quick intake of breath told me that he was curious, and for me to continue. "The man. He was talking to me. Telling me that I had his disease. And so did 'the boy' which I assume was you. Then he told me to remember a number. 18891. And Albert, I know that number. It's an address. In Mexico. The house is on the shore of Rancho Nuevo. Strangely, I think that whoever we are looking for, or that scientist you had mentioned, is going to be there. And whether or not it’s the scientist or the crackly voice man, there is something that is going to help as at that house." Albert had been quiet the whole time, and I worried that he didn't believe what I had said, or he had gotten disgusted and hung up. Finally, I heard him breathe. "Perhaps you're right, Kerii. Of course a person, crazy scientist or not, has to live in a house. That will be the first place we look. I'll try to get a hold of an address book for that area, so we can find directions." I nodded, despite the fact that he couldn't see that. Then I remembered something I was going to ask him, "Albert, when I was driving home the other day, I heard your voice in my head. I heard you say 'what if she gets hurt' and 'what to do'. What do you think that means?" From the silence, I could tell that he was thinking. "I would say that I guess the disease has showed us something else. You’re telepathic. Actually, a couple of days ago, I thought I had heard your voice in my head. You were trying to decide what to wear in the morning. I thought it was very peculiar." "How strange." I said, thinking hard about it.  "Kerii." Albert's voice interrupted my thinking, "I have to go now. I won't be at school tomorrow; I have to make plans about Mexico. You know, buy plane tickets, and get money from my account, etcetera. We'll talk more about this on Wednesday, though.  Bye, my love." And he hung up. I closed my phone. "Bye, my love." I mimicked to the phone.
