Fireflies

Fireflies

A Poem by Rainee Whiting

Fireflies

Curious she stands in tall grass with bare toes,

she glances back to see her life,

it is then that she knows.

Her pale hands glide across the emerald sea,

tiny flecks of light dance for her,

spinning, tumbling, playfully.

Walking, then floating in a place of splendid things.

Unafraid she goes comforted,

by the humming of a million delicate wings.

Her mortal dance completed,

the last note vibrates of her song,

but here in this place she knows,

her spirit continues on.

Knowing in life she found comfort,

beneath the darkest of skies,

she is granted wings of an angel,

and an eternity of dancing with fireflies.

I loved this. I loved the first line, particularly standing on grass with bare toes. It makes me think of Song of Myself by Walt Whitman when he asks What is Grass? The symbolism behind grass is interesting as it can range from capturing a childlike tone to expressing a sense of humanity. People are born into the earth and descend into it. We come into the world "bare" and naked and leave it "bare" and naked. I love that get a lot from the very first line.

The second stanza takes me on a flight into the sky. I like that you described the sea as emerald. The color emerald captures maturity as well as spirituality.

I thought the next stanza was too frank, but then as I kept reading I grew to appreciate the strength behind those first two lines when you say, "unafraid she goes comforted." I especially love the following line.

I loved the next stanza about a "mortal dance" and continuing it with a "song." Fireflies have a way of giving off light unique to them so I thought the ending was perfect.

I loved the imagery and got a morbid poem that is dreamy and lovely. Going in my library.

Thanks for posting! Have a great day!

A beautifully drawn tale. Even under the darkest of skies we can find happiness.
