A Mother's Unconditional Love

A Mother's Unconditional Love

A Poem by Rebecca Ann Englehart

“A Mother’s Unconditional Love”

Mother’s Day-May 2000

To: Elizabeth Ann Thomas

Many years have passed

Since the day our eyes first met

Even though you barely knew me

Your love for me was set

When I was just a baby girl

And all I did was cry

You held me close to you

And sang a lullaby

First you changed my diapers

And cleaned up all my toys

Then bragged to all your friends

How I dumped all the boys

“You forgot to brush your teeth!”

“You need to go to bed!”

“This is for your own good”

At least that’s what you said

I know how much it hurt you

When Nana passed away

And I know I didn’t help it much

When I ran away

I know that we’ve been through a lot

But together faced our fears

We stuck together side by side

Through the laughter and the tears

Now that I am older

I realize what you meant

Everything you ever said was right

It was only love you sent

Now that I am on my own

I don’t know what to say

I miss the way you held me close

I miss it every day

So today I want to thank you

For being there for me

For your guidance and understanding

And love, unconditionally.
