Snapshot

A Poem by rachielle

My reflection

Glistening in your hazel eyes

Is something

No other lens could provide.

As I take my camera

And try to capture the wonder

Of each little thing I can find,

I realize that

I would never be able to feel

The love, or beauty in my photos

As I do when I stare into your eyes,

And see you staring back at mine.

No photograph can compare

To the strip of memories

Flashing through my head-

Perfect little moments like that

Could never be tangible.

As I hold my camera to my face

And try to see the world

In my honest viewfinder,

I see you standing there

Smiling at me,

And I click the shutter.

Then came out what I thought was impossible-

I managed to seize your beauty,

Your love,

And my happiness

In a snapshot of you.

There, my Polaroid printout lay

With you smiling,

Your eyes glistening;

And for a moment,

Everything was perfect.

These are memories we cherish, and sometimes we happen
to catch those memories on camera, stilled forever.

..But only for a moment.

A softly wistful piece that sits in the mind almost like the breath of a sigh on your neck. It is comfortable and strangely reassuring but at the same time tragic - moments in time cannot be kept. A photo is a beautiful, yet sad and tragic artefact of time. I think you capture here how much it will be missed.

I like this one, Rach. There's beauty that you can see, but you can't capture it fully. There are attempts to capture the moment, but all we get are little snippets never the whole thing.

I love this one... Keep writing Rach.

This feels like several poems in one. There's the contradiction; the speaker could never capture the moment, and yet, the moment was perfectly captured. Then there's the metaphor of a camera, then the actual act of taking a picture. I think there is a lot going on here, and these elements could overrun each other. The lines in and of themselves are elegant and poignant. But I think this poem has enough material for several poems. That's just me. Thanks for sharing!

This is a brillaint take on the lens of the camera and the glimmer in the eye. Beautifully done with a tenderness joyful wonder.

Being a photographer I can definetely connect with this poem... It makes me feel sadness when I imagine the person I thought I loved, but never had I gotten even a picture to remember him by... And it really is amazing when poems capture so much emotion.. Very beautiful piece.
