2. Awake

2. Awake

A Chapter by Rachel

Disoriented, I look at the clock. It's only 6:00 AM, and I am now wide awake. Not that I should be surprised. I have been having this same dream for weeks. It's a miracle that I get any sleep at all, after dreading my subconscious being mauled by a Doberman-shaped demon every night. I realize that I have to dream, or I will eventually go crazy, but this is getting a little ridiculous. As I attempt to rol over, I become instantly aware that every muscle on the right side of my body is aching. Not so strange, considering that is what the dream-pup went for first, but I am starting to wish that my nightly visions wouldn't manifest themselves so physically.

My alarm clock won't start screeching for another couple of hours, but I'm not going back to sleep any time soon, so I turn it off and get dressed. Not that it matters what I wear. Nobody looks at me at school except to say something that they think will hurt me, and my parents are usually gone by the time I leave, so they let me do whatever I want in the mornings, and afternoons... oh yeah, and evenings too. I am an only child, so I guess it does get a little lonely around here sometimes. I don't have any friends, mostly because I have acquired a reputation for being weirder than most of the other students.

I walk into the hallway, knowing that I am the only one in the house. I have nothing to do until the sun comes up, so I flop down on one of the couches, turn on the television, and think about how completely boring and depressing my life is. I just wish something would happen, but nothing ever happens to me. I guess I don't let it, because maybe I'm afraid that I might get hurt somehow, but my routine just seems so monotonous most days. If only something exciting would happen.
