I dream of having a downtown apartment
A little studio in a rickety complex
One of many dozens lined up
None more elaborate than the others
The wooden stairs would groan
Bouncing echoes in the hall
Scratched floorboards would vibrate
With the slam of doors, or strangers music
Playing too loud for thin walls.
The windows would offer a less than spectacular view
Perhaps flaking paint on bricks across the alley
A glimmer of sunlight would drop from above.
The rent would be a little too high
My salary, a little too low.
I'm not asking for much.
Just enough to be happy in this little space
Alone with my books, my coffee, and my art
All visual reminders that the world really is, in fact
....beautiful.
