Complications

A Chapter by Rachael Rainbow
"

The Homogenizer is such an A*S.

"

Amy and Chloe said their goodbyes after last block, as Amy was on the swim team and didn’t ride the bus home. Drew and Chloe swapped stories about their budding romances, looking at the world through rose-colored glasses.

“She’s so beautiful.”

“He’s so hot.”

After finishing their homework, Adriana, Chloe’s mother, took them out to drink overpriced coffee and explore the “hotbed of culture” in their town. As the sipped their frappes and talked and laughed, a giant mass clinging to the clock tower called Chloe’s name.

The Homogenizer! With Amy in his hands!

She was screaming.

“What the hell! Put me down! What are you doing?!” she cried, hitting him multiple times.

“This looks like a job for LADY LESBO AND GAY GUY!”

They both ripped off their clothes in the middle of the street, eliciting many strange looks from passerby.

“Oh! Our masks!” Drew said, throwing a Phantom-of-the-Opera-esque mask at her, which she fumbled with but eventually caught, putting it on over her face.

“We can’t fly!” She cried.

“We can if we BELIEVE!” He yelled, double jumping as if he were Mario and spider-monkey-esque he attacked the wall, climbing up it like Spiderman.

Chloe stood with her mouth agape.

“What the hell, man,” she yelled.

“Come on, my love! Just believe!” He cried.

This is so f*****g stupid. She rolled her eyes, but did it anyway.

“Holy s**t, Dr"I mean, Gay Guy, you were right.”

They climbed up to where he stood, holding her tightly. They looked at each other.

S**t. Their powers? Useless.

“Use your fabulosity!” She yelled as she pounded her fists uselessly against his back. Amy was knocked out, her pretty redhead thrashing rhythmically back and forth. Chloe’s heart ached for her.

“It’s not working!” he yelled back.

“We’re crappy superheroes!”

“Then we’re perfect for this town!”

She shot him a withering glare.

“Um… can you beat him up?”

“What a manly request, dude. But of course, cause I am beautiful and talented and generally pwn.”

“Yes you are. JUST F*****G DO IT.”

She bit her lip, drew back her fist, and punched him in the jaw. His head snapped to the side, accompanied by a sharp intake of breath.

“YOU B***H!” He roared, his curse echoing off the walls of the two-story town.

Amy slipped from his fingers. Her hair fluttered in the breeze, and limp, like a doll, she fell to earth.

“S**T!” Chloe yelled, diving after her, taking her hand, pulling the limp form of the woman she loved, and with struggle hoisted her into her arms, just as they hit the pavement with an uncomfortable crunch.

Panicked, Drew looked from Chloe and Amy on the ground, broken and bleeding, to the leering Homogenizer.

Somewhere within his heart, he summoned up courage. Courage and anger, the two most important things in battle. He pulled back his fist, letting it connect with The Homogenizer’s face, hearing the satisfying crack. Flashbacks come to mind. Freshman year. Homogenizer stuffing Drew in the locker. Another satisfying crunch of bone beneath Drew’s fist. The fight his goons dragged Drew into. The black eye he sported for a month. Drew punched the Homogenizer in his eye. With every memory, Drew fought with renewed vigor, eager to repay the person who had caused him so much agony much the same agony.

Then, the Homogenizer fell. Big as he was, he fell on the sidewalk and it cracked beneath his weight.

Amy was wrapped safely in Chloe’s arms. They were both knocked out and bleeding.

“Hey! Is there a doctor here? Anyone? Please, help my friends! Please, I’m scared for them! They could be dying! They could be dead! Help, anyone?” He cried.

Just like prayers to a God that might not exist, the people below fluttered about, oblivious to all but that which lay directly ahead, never bothering to look to the side, horses with blinders.

“Help! Please!” His pleas fell upon deaf ears, and grew increasingly more faint. He, too, tumbled through the air and plummeted into the sidewalk.

Then all was black.
