Ode to Y DaysA Poem by Rachael Rainbow
The chiming of bells is a long-awaited sound
Signaling the end of one tedious, monotonous class, Yet alas, it heralds a new one. Concert band, Spanish II, Gym, Earth Science New forms of torture Yet unknown to Amnesty International The drone of tuning notes and flat scales Enough to make a freshman's head spin Accompanied by the shouting sounds Of my lovely always angry band teacher. Late arriving to Spanish Treated as if I were four And not as if I were my real age of fourteen Oh, didn't you know, teacher, You're teaching Spanish II, Not elementary school! Struggling to stay awake Yawning and chanting preterite endings Like some mindless drones Oh, and physical education! What a wonderful subject! Running about like a prison inmate Sweating and cursing as if it were an orgasm Of some deranged kind. Oh, and the beauty of Earth Science! Sitting in the back of a cold classroom Like a lazy delinquent set in her ways Eyes impatiently set on the clock Moving as slowly as the psychos in horror movies The seconds dropping by, and-- YES! THE BELL! The bell that marks freedom, stowed away on a noisy bus.
