child's perspective

child's perspective

A Poem by rachael dunn

With impatient expectation

little faces change expression.

laughing alongside a highway of boredom,

chasing endless vanishing points.

When tall people break promises

towers of disappointment rise up,

provoking storm clouds from fairytale skies.

Unwished for lessons arrive on punctual lines.

At story time imaginations float like dandelion seeds

Suspended disbelief rules the literature hour,

with every savoured tick-tock of the clock

Un tuned voices sing a ballad future bound.

I really like this poem a lot. I see the chasing endless vanishing points action in my siblings; children always on the go, always exploring, always curious. And always forgiving. They posses such strong boundary-less imaginations, we have much to learn from the children in our lives. I think you captured a child's essence beautifully. Great piece.

An excellent poem... it evoked a lot of thoughts for me. I can still remember 'chasing' those 'vanishing points' with my hopelessly undeveloped perception of the world (i could never grasp that the world could be spherical or that Australians didn't 'fall off' the underside of the world!) and now my youngest son is asking all the same questions i did. I read to my children a lot and they love books; books have helped my oldest son develop his imagination (even though he has Asperger Syndrome) and i read with children in school too.

Simply beautiful....
I am still the child you describe inside, in the first stanza..
still "chasing endless vanishing points"

And we have all grown by "unwished for lessons"

My Father was a great story teller, even if he didn't feel like telling one at night,
my siblings and I would tickle him until he did...because
"At story time imaginations float like dandelion seeds"

I learned the joy of loving children from him...this poem reminds me of that.
Thank you for writing it
