Finding Home (Part 3)

Finding Home (Part 3)

A Story by Quinn W
"

Lucas makes his decision.

"
I lay down in bed and think of all the reasons why I should stay and why I should go. Yes, I like Callie. A lot. But, that's only one reason. In Florida, I've got a house, family, friends, a job, a potentially better job. If I'm going to stay, I need to figure something out. I can't just keep staying at Callie's parents' house. What if I went back to Florida, stayed there a little while and visited Callie very so often. Then, I would be stable and I would see her. But, I really like it here. It's different. It's so calm and relaxing. The atmosphere and the people are amazing.
I fall asleep debating to stay or leave.
When I wake up, I can already smell breakfast downstairs. God, these people are so nice. I walk downstairs and am pushed into the kitchen and into a chair. I eat the best eggs and biscuits I've ever had. Callie walks in.
"We need to talk," she whispers to me so her mother can't hear. I nod my head and try to smile at her. I don't know what I'm going to tell her. I still haven't decided yet. After breakfast, we head towards the trial. She sits down on a flat rock and pats next to her, motioning for me to sit beside her.
"So... what are we?" she asks.
"I don't know."
"Well at least tell me if you like me. You can't lead a girl on and then say that you don't know. You can't just kiss her and not talk about it," she sounds different, angry.
"Well. I do like you. I like you a lot actually." She smiles. "I just don't know if I can stay here much longer. I have this job opportunity and it would be really good for my career. Plus, my family and friends."
Her smile drops. "I understand."
"I just don't know what I can do right now. I'd love to stay, I really would, it's just that I don't have a house or an apartment here or a job. I can't just stop everything and stay here."
I can see her eyes start to tear up. I try to grab her hand but she pulls it away from me. She turns her head and loos the opposite way. "Why would you do this? You can't make someone like you this much and then say that you can't be in a relationship with them. It's just not fair." She stands up and walks towards the house.
I don't think I can stand to see her cry so I walk down the gravel road and get in my car. I start to drive until I get to this street. It has a market and a few cafes. I park and start walking down the sidewalk to think. Pretty soon, I start to get hungry and stop by a small restaurant. I order a bagel with egg and sit down to eat it. When I leave the restaurant I spot a doctor's office across the street. There's a sign that says they will be closing soon due to lack of employees.
I cross the street and open the door. There's a man standing behind the desk.
"I'm sorry sir. We aren't taking any new patients anymore," he says sadly.
"Actually, I saw the sign in the window. I was wondering if you were willing to talk about a job for me. It would be great if you had time."
"Of course!" he says excitedly. He tells me that he needs my license and a list of all my past jobs. I tell him that I live in Florida and my information is there. I hive him my phone number and I tell him that I will call when I get back. He doesn't look hopeful that I will but he gives me a slight smile.
I drive back to Callie's house and pack up all of my things. I thank her mother and father and get in my truck. I'm headed home. When I get back home, my roommate asks me why I'm late. I explain the situation and tell him that I'll be moving out tomorrow. He says he understands but I know he thinks I'm crazy for doing this for some country-girl. She's special though. She's not just "some country-girl".
I had just recently moved in with David so some of my stuff was still in boxes. I go to my closet and got all of them out and put them in my car. I pack up the rest of my stuff. I'm ready for tomorrow. I sit down on the edge of my bed and take out my phone. It's time to call the doctor's office.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My GPS is telling me that I'm ten minutes away from Callie's house. I start to sweat. I'm nervous, but excited.
I walk up the gravel driveway and knock on the front door with flowers in my hand. Callie's mother opens the door and hugs me. I called her earlier to tell her why I left and what I planned to do.
"Callie?" he mother calls.
She walks down the stairs and gives me a hard look. Then, she turns and walks out towards the horses. I follow her flowers in hand. she its down on the rock we sat on before.
"You shouldn't be here, Lucas. You've broken my heart already, you're just making it worse now. Please go back to Florida," she says.
I put my hand on her cheek and guide her face towards mine. She doesn't stop me from kissing her. She wraps her arms around my neck as the kiss deepens. I pull back and hand her the flowers. She smells them and then kisses me on the cheek. "Thank you. For coming back, for bringing me flowers. Thank you."
"I did something else too," I say.
"And what's that?" she asks.
"You know the doctor's office on Marigold Drive?" She looks at me slightly confused and responds "Yes. I do, Lucas. Why?"
"Well, they were going out of business because they didn't have enough employees. So I-"
"You didn't!" she cuts me off. "Did you seriously get a job there?"
"I did."
She looks at me with her beautiful blue eyes and says "I love you." I kiss her lips and whisper back to her, for only her to hear "I love you too."

This is the last part in the story Finding Home. I hope you enjoyed it. It was really fast paced and not very well written but... oh well.

Nice conclusion, Quinn. I honestly did enjoy reading this series even though it was brief. It was sweet and it serves to remind us all of the impact that our decisions and random encounters can have on our lives. If not for the storm at the beginning, Lucas and Callie may never have met. Good work!
