Secret-keeping Seas

Secret-keeping Seas

A Poem by lightning-born

Tracing circles in the sand,
Uneven heartbeats,
Out of sync.

The ocean has seen much,
Including love,
Including heartbreak,
Including the solitary sobs,

That came from her that night.

Waiting for someone who isn’t coming,

Waiting for someone who isn’t around.

She remembers the feeling,

When they broke the news.

“He’s gone,” They told her.
“I’m sorry.” As if that would make it okay.

She wasn’t even sure,
If he died loving her.

“He did, of course he did,” They would tell her.
But what,
What did they know?

He told her that he loved her,
The sea as a witness.
He told her that he couldn’t do it anymore,
The sea as a witness.

Feet sinking in the wet sand,
It was like the earth was trying to eat her up.
She wouldn’t mind it, she thought,
As the water met her toes.

She wouldn’t mind it at all.

Hi, Quinn … it's just Richard.
This is so beautifully rendered in Free Verse (one of my favorite forms), and your title set the mood perfectly, even as it drew my thoughts and feelings into the moment.
I don't know how many ways there are of saying goodbyes, or how much it is possible to express someone is missed who has left life (as we know it), but I do know how terribly difficult it is to say it in our hearts and souls, if we ever really do or can.
The timbre of your poetic voice in this piece threads all through it like tender ribbons of sorrowful emotions wrapping around a yearning ache, ever-so poignantly gentle.
It is hurtful enough to lose a loved-one, but when they take their own life, one is often left with a tug of guilt that something could have, should have been done to prevent it … and, it isn't at all unusual one might consider easing the pain of loss by joining them … wet sand does hold a certain comfortable lure; especially, the way you've expressed it.

Formatted and presented brilliantly, there is not much I can add to improve it — I bow low in great admiration to the appeal of your bountiful skills … thank you, Dear Poet! ⁓ Richard

I love how the sea has such a "calming effect" on a person and yes, they can hold many untold secrets. It can help feel connected to someone who is no longer there. If you used to go there often with someone, I know they would be admiring you being by the ocean when they are gone, with them watching you from the sky.

I enjoyed the poem. I love the sea. Perfect place to be reborn and forget.

I agree with the lines above and thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

No better place than the sea or the lake. You are welcome.
