A Story by em-em zaldivar

Excerpts from “For One More Day” by Mitch Albom

But ask yourself this: Have you ever lost someone you love and wanted one more conversation, one more chance to make up for the time when you though they would be there forever? If so, then you know you can go your whole life collecting days, and none of them will outweigh the one you wish you had back.

When you’ve rotten yourself, you become rotten to everyone else, even those you love. – Chick

And being unheard is the ground floor for giving up, and giving up is the ground floor of doing yourself in. – Chick

What is it about childhood the never lets you go, even when you’re so wrecked it’s hard to believe you ever were a child? – Chick

Kids chase the love that eludes them, and for me, that was my father’s love. He kept it tucked away, like papers in a briefcase. And I kept trying to get in there. – Chick

And I didn’t want it to end. That’s the best way I can explain it. I knew it was impossible. But I didn’t want it to end. – Chick

The question was so simple, it was impossible to answer. – Chick

Children forget that sometimes. They think of themselves as a burden instead of a wish granted. – Posey

When a lost loved one appears before you, it’s your brain that fights it, not your heart. – Chick

Sometimes, kids want you to hurt the way they hurt. – Posey

Things can be fixed. – Posey

All divorces does is divert you, taking you away from everything you thought you knew and everything you thought you wanted and steering you into all kinds of other stuff. – Chick

Going back to something is harder than you think. – Posey

“What’s ordinary, Charley?”

“You know. Someone you forget.”

When someone is in your heart, they’re never truly gone. They can come back to you at unlikely times. – Posey

You can find something truly important in a minute. – Posey

It’s such a shame to waste time. We always think we have so much of it. – Posey

It’s such a big world. Something is always happening somewhere. – Posey

Suddenly, details seemed extremely important. Details were something to grab on to, a way to insert myself into the story. – Chick

And I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know. – Chick

Things change when you are not in danger anymore. – Posey

You have one family, Charley. For good or bad. You have one family. You can’t trade them in. You can’t lie to them. You can/;t run two at once, substituting back and forth. – Posey

Why should I hate her? She only wanted the same things I did. She didn’t get them either. – Posey

A child should never have to choose. – Posey

I feel ashamed now that I tried to take my life. It’s such a precious thing. I had no one to talk me out of my despair, and that was a mistake. You need to keep people close. You need to give them access to your heart. – Chick

But there’s a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes, the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begin. – Chick

Sharing tales of those we’ve lost is how we keep from really losing them. – Maria
