When Will The Rain Stop?

Love’s Final Destination

“Love to run smooth will often be rough; to give pleasure must first cause pain; to create joy may sometimes beget sorrow.”

– Catch Me A Firefly by Freda Jayne

FLASHBACK

The rain poured heavily. She was running as fast as she could towards the bus station. She was almost soaking wet. Loose strands of hair brushed back and forth her face. Suddenly, a strong wind blew past her, causing the ribbon tying her hair in a neat ponytail to cut loose. It was blown away by the wind in front of her and it fell on the pavement.

From an adjacent side of the intersection a young man carrying an umbrella was about to cross the street when a fuchsia ribbon fell beside his feet. He knelt down and picked it up and spun around to see the owner. As he looked behind him, a girl was running towards his direction. She was panting for breath and immediately stopped as soon as she was in front of him.

“Is this yours?” He managed to ask.

She nodded her head in confirmation. She coughed and shivered because of the coldness surrounding her. Using both her hands, she covered it in front of her mouth and started exhaling some air to keep her palm warm. She felt nothing but the frigid atmosphere.

Instinctively, he removed his jacket and placed it on top of her slender shoulders. He moved towards her, placing the umbrella on top of them. He placed the ribbon inside his pocket as he took a mental note of returning it to her later.

“This rain isn’t going to stop. C’mon let’s head for the coffee shop.” He said. And without waiting for a reply, he gently assisted her as they walked together.

She did not bother to argue. She was feeling cold and the thought of having a cup of coffee seemed nice. As soon as they had entered the place, they sat at the farthest table from the entrance, near the window.

He gestured for the waitress and in a jiffy, a young girl approached them. He ordered two cups of brewed coffee and it wasn’t long until it was served to them.

“Thank you.” She said after her first sip from her cup.

“It was nothing.” He answered. “I’m Adrienne. And you are?”

                “Konstantine.”

END OF FLASHBACK

“Never mind the others. We will pick up the pieces from there.  Time will heal the wound. As long as he and I understand each other.”

It was still raining even when night had fallen already. It was an half past eight in the evening. Under a damp and star-studded sky, two helpless and wistful souls longed to have a glimpse of happiness. And this day did not seem as ordinary as the others. It was written in the stars, as if the rain acted as a soothsayer, that a rendezvous was coming.

Konstantine traipsed towards the front door. She sighed deeply before she stepped outside her apartment and locked the door behind her. She opened her cerulean-coloured umbrella and made her way towards the street. She had a lot of contemplations before she decided to go there. On this very same day, she had met him. Inside that coffee shop where they had a cup of coffee together. Only the rain witnessed such tryst. But in a blink, everything was gone. He was gone.

She was completely oblivious as to what destiny had laid for her that day.

Adrienne did not bother getting soaked up in the rain. He was tired of avoiding things that would leave him reminiscing about her. And the rain was no exemption. He wanted to put a closure to this dilemma for once and for all. And running away from the past would not help him feel relieved nor change anything. True indeed, deep down in his heart, he hoped against hope to find her there. That mere thought of reality made him twinge.

She stood up from where she was seated and was about to go out when she saw a fuchsia ribbon under the table. Someone who sat there before her must have dropped it. She picked it up and her eyes widened in surprise. That ribbon seemed old and looked so familiar. She couldn’t possibly go wrong – it was hers.

He hurriedly went back to the coffee shop. He was sure he had dropped it there. That was the only place he went to today. He pushed the door open as the chimes made a soft clashing sound. He headed towards the table where he sat earlier and stood aghast at what he saw.

There she was, standing right in front of him. He was nailed down on his pace. His world seemed to have stopped revolving right then and there. Could his eyes be teasing him? Could she be just an apparition?

As though she sensed someone was watching her, Konstantine raised her gaze. And her eyes met with the eyes of the man she had yearned to see. She bit her lover lip, trying hard not to burst into tears.

He hastily crossed the distance between them and encircled his arms around her, wrapping her in a tight embrace. “Finally, I found you. I’m not letting go of you again, I promise.”

She nodded as a silent agreement to what he said. She knew he would keep his promise and that they would be together forever. “At last, you’re back. My long wait is now over.” She rested her head on the crook of his neck. “I love you.”

He cried as he heard her say those words. “Hmmm.. I love you more.”

It was like a deja vu. Two destined hearts met one rainy day, parted ways and were now reunited. It was a day full of miracles, all made possible by love.

Everything else surrendered to oblivion. The rain had stopped already. The sun’s relentless rays shown brightly into the horizon. And outside, there was nothing else that existed except the infinite, clear blue sky and a beautiful rainbow.
