A Short-Lived Affair

A Short-Lived Affair

A Poem by Phoenix Wolf-ray
"

a darkly humourous tale of love gone wrong

"

In a sultry steaming jungle

a maiden bowed her head in prayer

begging favour from those gods

that guard the meek.

Her eyes flowed honey tears

her lily lips were pursed in fear

soft brown hands clenched tightly

 twisted and beseeching.

Her supple downy neck proved

irresistible to one who hid

invisible in shadow-dappled hide.

His great heart beat with loving need

his fond desire was true union

great fanged jaws clamped firmly, gently;

razor teeth met in his bride.

Tenderly her lover lapped

the swiftly-pooling viscous blood

which curdled round her

softly wilting corpse.

So reverent he tore the flesh

which cradled sculptured bone,

and in Mystery did house

the subtle flame that was her soul.

He devoured that which drew him,

yet continued to elude him

as her warmly-pulsing heart

grew cold as stone.

Surrounded by her shreds and tatters,

seeking in the bones he scatters

some pale flicker of the she that was,

never once suspecting her death's cause.
