Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box

A Poem by H. M. K.

Jack the Cat's in his box

for the third time today.

The children wish he'd come out;

Jack wishes to stay.

The boys scream like banshees

and attack him with toys,

but Tabby Jack stays immune

to that detestable noise.

The girls, they play dress-up

with Jack and his box.

They adorn his striped body

with hats, bibs, and socks.

Poor Jack, worn out

from this rough kind of play,

claws out their eyes,

and the kids go away.

If I learned one thing from this, it's that I can't write an appropriate children's poem. Otherwise, this is just a bit of fun.

Funny! I loved it! You should read my poem (Kitty's Prayer). This reminded me of it. Of course your version is a little more harsh! Lol

Kittys prayer

I was surprised by the ending. This could be an Aesop fable. I think the twist makes it more appropriate, actually. Fables and 'Mother Goose' stories frequently used unexpected nastiness to teach moral lessons about human nature and the world we live in.

Kudos on the perfect metaphor in the title. Jack in the Box toys surprise kids, Jack (in the box) had a surprise for the kids too. Very clever.
