Proud Girl

Proud Girl

A Story by LynLee

The girl stood there, proudly, infront of the beast.

"Haha," it laughed, "small girl you cannot defeat me."

She replies, "I may be small, but I tell you monster, I can defeat you." He eyed her while he circled her. He looked for weapons, though she had none. He smiled.

"Small girl I see no weapons. Have you no sword, no bow?"

"No monster, only my thought."

"Hmm," He said to himself, "Then how do you plan to defeat me?"

"Well beast, we are in the woods. There are weapons all around us, and my father has taught me well. I could slay you with a twig." The beast thought a moment. "So you were taught by your father? Have you no brothers? Surely they would not send a girl to defeat me, the 'Great Beast of the Forest!"  She nodded noticing the emphasis he put on his own title. He was a proud monster.

"No beast I am afraid I am an only child. My mother could not bear anymore children or she may die as well as the child."

"Oh, I see." said the beast. He eyed her again. "You are close to your father?"

"Indeed." She replied.

"And he has taught you well?"

"He has taught me the best!" She said.

"Oh, then how can you defeat something you cannot see?"

And he disappeared.

She turned and looked, but saw it no where.

"You cannot see me, but I can see you." It mocked her, repeating it over and over again.

She spun and began to get dizzy. Not knowing where to look.

"Come out beast! Have you no pride of a fair fight?!"

"Indeed I do." She turned to face into his deep glowing eyes.

"You see my child, I cannot fight as a hunter was able to take my nails while I was sleeping. i could simply pounce you and crush you beneath my hand, but I like to take risk," He moved closer to her, backing her up. "You have brought no weapons, that means you will die. You say you have only your thought, though you tell me your darkest secrets. Because, you see, once you are dead a miracle will happen and your mother will bear another child, a child prouder and better than you." The beast saw her eyes swell up and a tear fall.

"Oh child do nto cry. Just say when and I will take away the pain."

She looked down. Her tears falling on the dirty forest floor. "When." She whispered. Within a minute she was no longer a proud girl.

He walked through the door into the warm house. The smell of soup and bread in the air.

"Hello darling. How did she do?"

"I am afraid she has failed." He said

"Oh that's ashame."

"But not to worry! Surely our next child will be able to defeat me, 'The Great Beast of the Forest!"
