Paper and Footsteps

Paper and Footsteps

A Poem by Shawn Purcell
"

Religion and bureaucracy...

"

Slow creaking,

Whispering voices praying in the distance

For the listener hanging on the line

To annihilate

Religion.

Paper pushed across a desk.

Words glanced upon and forgotten.

Newspaper head lines

And short lived lives

Intertwined

Into a cache of coins from different

Currencies.

Students in a classroom,

Students safe in a class room

Discussing

Once upon a time.

Dry lines

Of ancient blood

Buried leagues

Beneath the violent sand storms

Run as though replenished

By oxygen in the veins of their kin

As God’s word in the hearts of his.

Slow creaking,

Loud footsteps sound closer

And pass by

Like a platoon of dark clouds.
