Gone to Memphis

Gone to Memphis

A Chapter by Shawn Purcell
"

A fantasy

"

It was a pretty little town when we pulled in

From a dirt road, miles off the interstate.

“It’s like we’re nowhere,” she said,

“This is all so surreal.”

Is this all you want and more?

Does it fulfill all your dreams?

Is it far enough from everything?

Is it what you need?

Chorus

And I’m gone,

Don’t know if I’ll be back again.

We got up and gone to Memphis

Said so long and were on our way.

And I’m gone,

Passed the highways, through the mud.

We got up and gone to Memphis

And we might be gone for good.

And some how you make it all complete,

Close the gaps that get the better of me.

Settle down, and start again,

It didn’t matter who we were then,

And we were free to ride on.

Passed streets whose names we’d never know,

And places others only go

While dreaming,

Chorus

And I can hear a slow drawl,

Every time she says Tennessee.

And I can see in her smile

She loves the person in front of me.

As we walk beneath the street lights

Down Union Avenue

Looking for the ghost of Elvis,

In the prints of blue suede shoes.
