A Brother’s Secret

It was midmorning on October 30th 1928 in San Fernando, California. Seventeen year old, Alysabeth Corre had just woken up and lay outstretched on her bed. She then heard a knock at her window. She quickly ran up to the window and looked down to see her boyfriend, Mason Dodds. “Hey Alysabeth, hurry up and get dressed. We gotta go” Mason shouted up at her. Alysabeth quickly ran to her closet and grabbed her royal blue flapper dress and shoes, and he silver flask. She ran down the steps and met Mason. He kissed her and escorted her in his car.

They drove for what seemed like hours down the Mexican Border. Border patrol then came up to the window. Mason slipped the man a Benjamin and went on into Mexico. The two lovers then drove for a few more hours into Baja California to a large mansion on the beach. Mason and Alysabeth got out of the car and walked to the mansion’s front door.

Mason knocked on the front door. A tall man with Irish skin, red hair, and green eyes answered the door. He was wearing a nice white shirt and black pants. His shoes were so shiny; you could see your reflection in them. “Ah mason. So good to see you again” the man said. “You too Bucky, oh this is my girlfriend Alysabeth” replied Mason. “Well it looks like we have a lot of catching up to do” said Bucky. “You see Alysabeth, Mason and I are brothers.”

Alysabeth and Mason followed Bucky into his lavish parlor. The parlor had a very red yet fashionable wall paper, a red brick fireplace, and red velvet draped over the chairs and sofas. The three people sat down and Bucky called in a very thin woman wearing nothing but black. Her hair had some grey hairs in it and was pulled back into a tight bun. Her face was sunken and dead looking, and her skin was a light tan. “Ah, Isabella” answered Bucky. “Please get my guest some champagne to celebrate our meeting.” “Yes sir” replied Isabella. She walked out of the room and walked back in with three glasses and a freshly opened bottle of champagne. She poured the drink into each glass and gave one to Bucky and Mason. She was about to give Alysabeth her drink when Isabella spilled it all over her legs. “Oh my God!” screamed Alysabeth. Isabella said nothing and cleaned up the mess, then poured another glass. Isabella then left the room silently.

Bucky, Mason, and Alysabeth chatted well into the night. They soon grew tired and Bucky led Mason and Alysabeth to their room. “Well, I guess I’ll see oyou two in the morning” bucky said. “Oh, mason. Don’t forget the booze for tomorrow night.” “Ok” answered Mason. He closed the door and got into bed with Alysabeth. The couple soon fell asleep.

It was in the wee hours of the morning and Alysabeth needed to use the bathroom. She got out of bed and walked down the long, dark hallway searching for the bathroom. She thought she saw it and reached for the knob when a strong, bony hand pulled he back. “Never go in there!” screamed Isabella. Her face looked even deader with the darkness and her hair down. She then led Alysabeth to the bathroom. “Remember, never go in that room!” she shouted. Isabella then made her way down the long and dark hallway. Alysabeth finished in the bathroom and went back to bed with Mason. She did not wake up until early Halloween afternoon.

Alysabeth walked down to the dining room where a grand breakfast was prepared. Mason and Bucky had already started eating and had prepared a plate for her. “So” said Bucky, “how did you all sleep?” “Oh I slept wonderfully” said mason. “What bout you Alysabeth?” asked Bucky. “It was a nice sleep” she said. “Wonderful, now you are both ready for tonight’s Halloween party!” said Bucky. The trio later finished eating, and Mason and Bucky left to go the booze while Alysabeth got ready for the party. She put on her long, light green dress with a yellow brooch in the middle of her breast. Then she brushed her short, brown hair and put on her matching hat. By the time she finished getting ready, Mason and Bucky had returned and gusts had started to arrive.

The party was absolutely wonderful. The music, drinking, and laughs made the party loads of fun. Eventually, Alysabeth got very drunk and decided it was time for bed. Isabella began to take Alysabeth to her room when Bucky stopped her and said he would take her. He walked her up the steps to the forbidden room. He opened the door and pushed Alysabeth inside. Bucky locked the door and went back to the party.

As the night wore on, all the guests had left except for Mason and Bucky. Isabella cleaned up the room and Mason and Bucky sat on the sofa talking. “Bucky, do you know what happened to Alysabeth?” asked Mason. “Yeah, she was drunk and went into the wrong room” said Bucky. “Would you like to take her to your room?” he asked. Mason nodded his head. He and Bucky got up and walked to the forbidden room. Mason opened the door. Alysabeth then fell into his arms. Mason looked up and saw that the room she was in was in fact and Iron Maiden.

There was no hope for Alysabeth. She died moments later in Mason’s arms. Mason looked up at Bucky. “How could you do this?!” he screamed. “You monster!” Bucky smiled and said, “Do you remember that one Halloween twenty years ago?” Mason shook his head. “So, you don’t remember locking the door to the apartment, leaving me outside in the ghetto?” asked Bucky. “What are you talking about?” asked Mason. “I’m talking about when mom came home from the hospital with you” screamed Bucky. “You got all the attention for your entire life. I got nothing.” Mason started shaking. “But you were quiet. We thought you wanted to be left alone” cried Mason. Bucky pulled out his pistol. “Happy Birthday Mason.” Bucky placed the pistol on Mason’s temple. He pulled the trigger, and both Mason and Alysabeth were dead. Bucky smiled. He placed the gun in his pocket. Another shot rang out. When the smoke cleared, Isabella stood sweating and panting over Bucky’s dead body. She dropped the gun and lit a match. She threw the match on the carpet and walked out the door. She stood on the beach watching the mansion burned to the ground. When the fire was out, Isabella walked into the darkness and disappeared into the night leaving the burnt down ruins behind her.

After I wrote this story, I learned that Boarder Patrol didn't become a problem until the 1930's..not 1928 when this story takes place. Also, this isn't completely a horror story, more along the lines of a creepy murder story...
