April Morning Serenade

April Morning Serenade

A Poem by Samuel Dickens
"

Inspired by the experience, I had to write about it

"

Early on an April morn, before the sun came up

I made a pot of coffee, and poured myself a cup

I’d barely sipped a sip or two when I did surely hear

A songbird singing sweetly, it’s voice so high and clear

Quietly, I sneaked outside, hoping I could see

That early morning soloist who sang so beautifully

Before the dawn as I looked on, across the road he sat

Upon the neighbor’s mailbox; can you imagine that?

An audience of one, perhaps, I listened to the song

A serenade of purest sound; not one note was wrong

Early on an April morn, before the sky grew light

God sent me down a singer to start my day out right

Author's Note

Samuel Dickens
I wrote this in April of 2010, and now it's a year later. When I walked outside with my cup of coffee this early morning, there on the same mailbox was a bird singing its heart out. I wonder--could it be the same one?

First, I need an update. Was it the same one.? Anyway, I too; enjoy watching our local birds (including the ornithological kind). Their patterns of movement, behavioural differences between different species; and those who sing in their own unique ways. Occasionally, I have even witnessed them squabbling; jostling one another for food (from our wooden bird table). Your poem rhymes nicely too, and I hope that your morning routine continues to be as calm and pleasantly predictable; as depicted here. Thanks for sharing.!

Thank you. I couldn't tell if it was the same one. The song remained the same. (Thank you, Led Zep) .. read more

Oh man, you're good at following the rhyme and meter patterns! Back when I wrote poetry (27 years ago) I had serious trouble with rhyme and meter. I'd make things rhyme by accident, or not be able to find the right rhymes. And I found counting syllables difficult. So good job! I'm impressed! And I appreciate bird song as well. Pretty weird coincidence. Perhaps it is an ancestral mailbox perch handed from father to son down the ages.

Thank you. Perhaps my NC ancestors brought it with them?
I have very lately had similar experiences Samuel.
We are just coming up to when the clocks go forward, which I think you folks call daylight savings time.
I have noticed that very early am, birds are twittering away and later on when it gets dark, they do so again but with shorter bursts, like they are wondering what's going on and are a bit confused by it.
Anyway, roll on next Sunday is what I say because even if it is silly o'clock they are singing at now, it is much sweeter to listen to than a juggernaut rolling by, shaking the foundations. 😃

Thank you. May we both be greeted by early morning songbirds in five months!
I'm 6 years late to this one Sam and you will have to excuse me from your sweet poem I hear the bird calling me.

Samuel,

I could clearly imagine that little one's song, after having been transported by your words to that place, and time. Thank you for the beautiful experience :)

Thank you, Renee. Yes, I imagine Eden is full of beautiful songbirds.
This is my kind of poetry .. I love my little blessed bird friends .. they comfort me often .. Hope you don't mind, here is one I wrote some time back ..

There is snow on the ground

I see the tracks of little feet

A sign that a few chose not to leave

And I smile for what you do ..

What sweeter comfort

Could you have sent ..

As the sunlight wanes

And the night draws near ..

J.

There was a pic of a little song bird attached ..

This is perfectly delightful Sam .. I love it .. Thank you .. .
