Glacial Facial

Glacial Facial

A Poem by Pete
"

In winter we lead a more inward life. - Thoreau

"
Wild ducks at a frozen pond ...

it's cold
the millpond is frozen
its water hard like the bricks and granite that surround it
ducks have taken to congregating at its center
a very small hole there, still allowing minimal access to the water
they sit, huddled around it as the wind howls like a werewolf
whistling a mournful, sorry tune

it's cold
so cold
no one offers them a blanket
no one hugs them
no one invites them in

it's cold
so cold
just so dumbfounding cold
you can feel the world's frigid sin
where do i begin
nothing to do but take it
take it on the chin
'til someone decides to let us in

Author's Note

Pete
"The ducks go back to mutter; they discuss my arrival and veering away, and the sound crosses the water, skips off the new ice. I thumb through the worn pages of my memory for the word that describes a gathering of ducks on water." - Thoreau
