Along With Forever

Birds on tv antenna black and white color vertical ...

i remember watching old tv shows and movies with dad
on an old black and white zenith tv with knobs and no remote
connected to an antenna through a wire running up through the attic and out to the eave of the roof
things like "the untouchables" with robert stack
charles bronson movies such as "hard times"
throwbacks to the era from whence he came of age

a different time when "amazon" was just the name of a rainforest
a time when a man's handshake meant something
when people didn't kiss and tell
a church wasn't just a building with a steeple and bell
with big windows and candles
a place you passed by on your way to somewhere else
and "pew" wasn't just what you said when somethings stunk

dad in his corner recliner after a hard day's work
me on the couch
just sitting and watching
together
neither one us saying anything
the world was ours
tough as it is

goodbye dad
i'll see you again
we'll watch tv just like we did back then
you turning knobs to get rid of the snow on the screen
me getting you a cold beer from the fridge
at the next commercial break
along with forever
and doubting thomas
i promise
both of us together again, sitting and watching
not saying a thing

I can really appreciate this fine write as I'm prone to a bit of reminiscing. I remember Bronson from this movie and The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner. I remember The Untouchables too. Here's a bit of trivia about Robert Stack, he was in the Guinness Book of World Records as a block and trap shot champion with a shotgun. So he really could shoot straight. The Honeymooners and later the Jackie Gleason Show, I Love Lucy, Secret Agent (I loved the Johnny Rivers intro to that) and so many other great shows. Family times shared and cherished, I thank you for the drift back in time. Wonderful piece. F.
