a woodpecker em'bark'ed in the rat-a-tat-tat of halcyon machine gun fire
rhododendrons lassoed lavender smiles
a forsythia shot absurd, unhinged, yellow fireworks upward and outward
not-so-incognito dandelions danced a cancan 'neath yellow berets as they tried to blend inconspicuously with a plush emerald sea
a blue spruce clung to deep life despite its nonfatal diagnosis of cyanosis
twin, blooming pear trees stood slim and tall like spring's library bookends, blanched candleholders
all of this just outside my window in a bold, brazen reminder that not all kindled flame smolders
the situation hardly what you'd call dire
despite my being caught in all of this bounteous, emblazoned crossfire
