No Surprise

No Surprise

The mason asks but a narrow shelf to spring his brick from; man requires only an infinitely narrower one to spring his arch of faith from. - Thoreau

Will America Be Judged? | Desiring God

sin overtakes
evil overrates
doubt trembles and shakes
righteousness tries
like a lawyers' compromise
forgive me
tired of living life in disguise
uncomfortably adorned with the garb of lies
some day i want to look god straight in the eyes
wanting him to answer my cries
after my spent, weary body dies
before a way my soul does devise
like lazarus made to rise

please advise
lift me up beyond wrapped skies
turn back time counterclockwise
don't make me agonize
truth's eternity the prize
plunge me in a font of tears
welcome me so that i am baptized
pray me what heaven's song supplies
grant me all that the good book implies
judge me according to what faith buys
by what a loving, forgiving heart testifies
that way when i breathe my last
there won't be any surprise

I don't advise a staring match with God. One, you can't win. Two, He doesn't like upstarts and will pull rank on you. Three, all that stuff you're asking for in stanza three will probably annoy Him. You really don't want to see That Old Boy when He's pissed. If you doubt me, ask the mayor of Sodom.
