Sugar Kisses

Sugar Kisses

A Poem by Pete

Love is no individual's experience; and though we are imperfect mediums, it does not partake of our imperfection; though we are finite, it is infinite and eternal. - Thoreau

with a plethora of treacly chalk and no banishing erasers
not having to go back to school 'til fall
we drank the heart-quenching coca cola of mellifluous infatuation from crystal clear bottles without straws
the sugary libation passing through the fenceposts of our braced teeth
playing paddleball with our hearts

that summer when we owned youth
holding it in the palms of our naive hands
hair thick with life and desire
lips inundated with a new religious confection
a flood of new emotions in epic proportions
tasting unforgettable sweetness

innocently

Author's Note

Pete
“Some poems are for holidays only. They are polished and sweet, but it is the sweetness of sugar, and not such as toil gives to sour bread. The breath with which the poet utters his verse must be that by which he lives.” - Thoreau
