Flying The Coop

Flying The Coop

Birds do not sing in caves, nor do doves cherish their innocence in dovecots. - Thoreau

you disliked morning's cawing crows
hated the cardinal's new clothes
disapproved of hemingway's prose
unable to admit what poe's raven for nevermore knows
choosing instead to pet the cats of what twain's verbiage throws

you hated duck soup
so you flew the coop
fearing hitchcock's birds
carefully sidestepping all of their feathery turds
unable to count high enough to slice a chicken into thirds
i highly doubt that you could ever take off on the wings of mere words

Author's Note

Pete
"There were times when I could not afford to sacrifice the bloom of the present moment to any work, whether of head or hands. Sometimes, in a summer morning, having taken my accustomed bath, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in reverie, amidst the pines and hickories and sumachs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around. I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been. They were not time subtracted from my life, but so much over and above my usual allowance." - Thoreau

as always your Thoreau quotes are in tune with your poem .. what a delightful quick read .. full of the lightness of a ..... hummingbird, let's say :) ... i think, however, if i considered a while and maybe knew you better .. there is a line of important statement in the thinking that brought this poem to life... i choose not to puzzle and instead really enjoyed the play with poets, poems and cliché' ... well done .. and now to lean back and enjoy some Led Z!!! so glad to catch this one my friend!

I was walking next to my mom .. white gloves and all .. when of a sudden a little bird from ??? dropped one right on her shoulder .. it was such a shock then laugh for us all .. it imprinted itself on my child nog forever .. and beautiful sunny Sunday Easter walk ;)
