Not-So-Secret Mission

Not-So-Secret Mission

A Poem by Pete
"

They were pleasant spring days, in which the winter of man's discontent was thawing as well as the earth, and the life that had lain torpid began to stretch itself. - Thoreau

Cherry blossom flowers against pine tree, Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan Photograph by Panoramic Images - Pixels

back to base
in cleared air space
returning from temporary leave
nearly impossible to conceive
the tall pines still stood at attention
everything else slouching under the drunken weight of a duffle bag of new blossoms

seeking neither medals nor promotion from a grateful nation
as yet another spring blew its whistle and called formation
locked and loaded
anticipated but surreptitiously coded
still saluting new beginnings
boarding the train at a crowded but secret station
in the brave, swollen, missioned ranks of creation

Author's Note

Pete
"Measure your health by your sympathy with morning and spring. If there is no response in you to the awakening of nature -if the prospect of an early morning walk does not banish sleep, if the warble of the first bluebird does not thrill you - know that the morning and spring of your life are past. Thus may you feel your pulse." - Thoreau

Interesting to see creation couched in military terms. Having once slouched under a duffel bag myself, I could identify. Of course, mine wasn't full of new blossoms.
