But Twice A Day

But Twice A Day

A Poem by Pete
"

The poet who walks by moonlight is conscious of a tide in his thought which is to be referred to lunar influence. - Thoreau

but twice a day

adept and adroit
never taking advantage, no need to exploit
charging in
retreating out
nary a cheer
absent a shout

it could be low
it might be high
no one sees its tears when it cries or dies
let alone stop or stoop to ask it why

little to think
even less to say
no one helps it
on this or any other day

sunny or gray
over both rocks and clay
always finding a way
never going astray

back and forth
with the heartfelt sigh of washed sound
ankles and feet bound
i seek the higher ground
come what will
come what may
no inclination to just stay

but twice a day

Love this!! I grew up in San Diego and Hawaii so know quite well of what you speak. Lived the beach life and had to watch whether the tide was coming in or going out so we knew when to get back to shore if we were out shelling on the reefs. Missed the cue a few times and were soaked. The tide does find its way through all the nooks and crevices of the shoreline. Lovely write, Pete! Temp
