Pete, much truth in Thoreau's words, even a hundred-plus years later. Still, as I take from your poem, we feel the blow and crush of suffering, and those are the times that test our faith. It's easy to be faithful when the fruit is on the table, fresh and untainted. It's all the other times that matter and build character, and later make life much richer and sweeter. I think I get the Madonna song, though I must admit I was never much of a fan. :) Good write, Pete, and more good picks on quotes and artwork.

faith is its own reward r.e. when our backs are against the wall and there's nothing else we can do.. read morefaith is its own reward r.e. when our backs are against the wall and there's nothing else we can do - is the only thing left to stand with. faith - its there when you don't need it and wants to turn and run when you do. your observations are spot on though easier said than done. passing through the fire, impurities are extracted and the gold remains. makes victory that much sweeter ... :)

I love reading, writing, music, nature, God and feeling emotion, not necessarily in that order. To me, these things go hand in hand. My favorite writer is Henry David Thoreau. I think he was a geni.. more..
