Picket Palisade

Picket Palisade

A Poem by Pete
"

The walls that fence our fields, as well as modern Rome, and not less the Parthenon itself, are all built of ruins. - Thoreau

Fence needs a new coat.
Some slats are missing too.
Where did we go wrong?
Was it  the overgrown grass and weeds that wandered in and took over?
Was it the downpours?
The gales or the blizzard?

I remember the scorching summers.
Some frigid winters.
A few doubting seasons.
Searching for reasons.
Didn't think we could make it through.
Only love stayed.
With those deep, entrenched posts of ...
... faith's palisade ...

Author's Note

Pete
"It is only necessary that man should start a fence that Nature should carry it on and complete it. The farmer cannot plow quite up to the rails or wall which he himself has placed, and hence it often becomes a hedgerow and sometimes a coppice." - Thoreau

I really like the symbolism here, with the mundane fence representing the relationship. Good flow and cadence. I pictured this as a train of thoughts, seeing the fence remindes the speaker of the seasons and then of his relationship. The initial image where you concentrate on just the details of the fence and then zoom out to include the surroundings reminded me of "The Red Wheelbarrow".
