Daily Bread

Daily Bread

A Poem by Pete
"

A man had better starve at once than lose his innocence in the process of getting his bread. - Thoreau

The pesky tide retreats but returns ever again.
Its rolling reign never asking how but when.
Clouds visit for a bit but seem to know just when to leave.
None of them say goodbye.
They don't even try.
Knowing that faith lives and doubt dies.
Goodness dances whilst evil is bled.
Never drawing lines in the sand but circles instead.
The night watchman guards earth's sleep and is relieved by an eager new day.
With sneakers laced and a song going round and round inside my stubborn head,
I thank God almighty for my soul's life giving bread ...

“You must love the crust of the earth on which you dwell more than the sweet crust of any bread or cake. You must be able to extract nutriment out of a sand-heap. You must have so good an appetite as this, else you will live in vain.”- Thoreau
