America The Dutiful

America The Dutiful

A Poem by Pete
"

When I think of the gold-diggers and the Mormons, the slaves and the slave-holders and the flibustiers, I naturally dream of a glorious private life. No, I am not patriotic. - Thoreau

People love America.
It has everything.
Except the soul you bring.
It's got stores selling health food.
Sports to get you booed.
Wireless gadgets to keep your tooth blued.
'YouTube' to keep your eyes glued.
Web pages that count how many times they've been viewed.
'Family Feud' to see if you're shrewd.
'Jiffy Lube' to keep your car running smooth.
Lawyers to fight when you've been screwed or sued.
Judges and politicians to collude.
Cops to keep you tazed and subdued.

It has ivory towers that are skewed.
People on the street to call you 'dude'.
Roads to drive rude.
Bars where you can get stewed.
Clubs to see people act lewd.
Even colonies where you can go around nude.
Not to mention gated-communities to live like a prude.
There are malls to take your brood.
Pills if you're in a bad mood.
Dentists to help you get your food chewed.
And doctors to rid you of your man b***s.
America is beautiful.
With neighborhoods that are suitable.
As long as you remain dutiful ...
