Dark Alleys

Dark Alleys

Invariably our best nights were those when it rained. - Thoreau

Thank Heaven for the breeze.
It dusts all the trees.
As they stand still and listen.
Never talking back.

Thank God for the rain.
It washes away pain.
Filling up Hell's valleys.
Not to mention the despair and urine from life's ...
... dark alleys ...

"A single gentle rain makes the grass many shades greener. So our prospects brighten on the influx of better thoughts. We should be blessed if we lived in the present always, and took advantage of every accident that befell us." - Thoreau

I get the impression the poet is thankful for those things that give us respite from life's unpleasantnesses. He uses forces of nature as symbols of relief from the "dark alleys" we encounter. I can get on board with this. Too much electronic exposure to the ills of the world can be dispiriting. A little cooling, cleansing rain can be a relief, as long as it doesn't turn into a cat 5 hurricane.

You know, if you stare at that photo long enough, you can almost hear the cadence of the rain falling. What an absorbing write to engage the senses. Love the quotations, too! How's Boston this fine summer day?
