Esse Quam Videri

Don't get me wrong.

I was thrilled to finally get there.

I'd heard so much about it over the years.

Watching it nightly on T.V.

I needed to see it in person before I died.

After all, it was America's own hometown.

Hollywood's unadulterated, whitewashed community up on a hill.

Complete with Andy's wave and thrill.

It's state's motto is,  'To be rather than to seem.'

As I pulled in, I couldn't help but notice the sign - 

'Welcome To Mayberry' it read.

But there was just one hitch.

Imagine my horror when upon closer examination, scrawled in graffiti, it also said ...

... 'The Sheriff is corrupt' and 'Aunt Bee is a b***h' ...
